Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Children's self-esteem is vital to a successful education. I teach 30 4-year olds in a S.R.L.D.P.(Pre-K) class in L.A.U.S.D. The majority of my students are from impoverished families. Their parents want the best for them, as we all do, but do not have the financial resources readily available. This is where I come in to help.

The program I teach has a Parent Education component. Every year the parents make a Pre-K Yearbook for their child. It includes one page for each month of the school year. I always do a lesson with the parents before they start writing. September might say, "This is your first year in school and I hope that you...". The parents finish that sentence and then decorate the page. I stress the importance of writing things that will make their child feel good about themselves and to point out their positive traits. The books usually include photographs of the children with their families. I would very much like to give them pictures of their children in school so that they could see what activities they are involved in. These photographs would add tremendously to the finished yearbooks. I have taken pictures to give them, but with my old 35mm camera I never know how they are going to turn out. It also gets very expensive developing the film.

I would love to have a digital camera to use in school. That way I could have it with me for those spontaneous moments to be captured forever. Children singing, laughing, playing and even working are a delight to watch. If I was able to share photographs of what the children do in school with their parents it would give them a good insight into what behavior their child displays when they are at school. It is also a great teaching tool for the children. They learn to be proud of themselves and their friends and will encourage them to continue trying new things.

Your contribution to my proposal will bring me one step closer to fulfilling my role as a Parent Educator as well as a classroom teacher. I know that the parents would be thrilled if I gave them pictures of their child enjoying themselves while learning. It would be a very positive experience for all involved.
