Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are 90% early second language learners. In the morning I need to draw them in with visual cues. This helps me get them involved early in the lesson. I use the phrase "one, two, three, eyes on me", this lets them know I need their attention. Active concentrated learning is my challenge!

My students come from low income families.

I have special needs children as well as emotionally challenged children. For some of my students, their classroom provides the only safe learning environment for them. They are excited to learn and are learning the value of education. Many of my students come from parents that did not have opportunity or support for basic education. We are located in a low income housing area and are plagued by gang activity. Our four schools serve many students with similar backgrounds. These students have taught me to value simple things in life. They have taught me the value of family and the importance of education.

My Project

With a teaching easel, I can bring my classroom community together and focus on a whole class lesson as well as work with a small group to reinforce a concept. I can also envision students using it to explain their thinking. With collaborative learning, my students can learn to be facilitators and become active learners.

This white board cart would enable me to bring a visual closeness to instruction so I can better see who is understanding and who is not.

When gathered at the rug it will give the students a visual focus point rather than just me. Students can use it to demonstrate understanding to each other. It will stimulate collaboration for all my students by giving them each a turn to show their work.
