One Small Step for Kindergarten, One Giant Leap for Moon Sand

My students need moon sand for our sand table.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When is the last time you dove your fingers down into sand and created a sand castle or a birthday cake with stick candles? Children and adults alike are drawn to creating temporary sculptures in sand. My children need fresh, clean sand to start out the school year!

My kindergarten students are a racially mixed group of 5 and 6 year old special education students, regular education students, and English Language Learners.

This diverse population of children provides the challenge for me every school year to bring children together from diverse backgrounds as a family, to help them respect each other's differences, to explore and find commonality, and to learn to love school.

My Project

Sand play promotes physical development. Large muscle skills develop as children dig, pour, sift, scoop, and clean up spills with a brush and dustpan. Eye-hand coordination and small muscle control improve as children learn to manipulate sand accessories. Sand play also promotes social skills. When children work together at the sand table, they are faced with real problems that require sharing, compromising, and negotiating. A group may engage in dramatic play as they "cook," construct roadways, dig tunnels, or create a zoo for rubber animals. As children take on roles associated with their dramatic play, they learn important social skills such as empathy and perspective taking. Math and science skills can also be developed as I change the toys that children play with in the sand, including measuring cups, funnels, and different sized containers.

Children have a natural affinity for sand play.

I promise to build on that interest by providing children with inviting props, asking appropriate questions, and scheduling ample time for children to work through their play ideas.
