My Students
My school empowers 538 students in grades pre-k through five to follow their dreams. One hundred percent of students fall below the poverty line and are provided with free breakfast and lunch. Many of the students at our school strive to be the first college graduates in their families. However, many students are English Language Learners and thus struggle with reading. Many students come to school and talk about hearing gunshots last night, their parent being incarcerated, or their cousin getting killed in a drug-related incident.
My Project
I am in charge of my school's student council. This month they decided to focus on building a bond of kindness throughout our school. The student council members, ages 6-12, are passionate about our school and want the best for each of their peers.
One School, One Book is a program in that children at all grade levels will be reading the same book.
The copies of Every Kindness will be disbursed to each classroom teacher in our school. This is a great time for teachers and students to sit down together and share a story and talk about kindness. Our students will learn the importance of reading, use fun activities to demonstrate their comprehension, and build reading skills. This will encourage attentive listening and prepares our students to be lifelong readers!
With the One School, One Book program, we aim to build a KIND community of readers at our school.
