Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Communication is an integral part of life. When students have a hearing loss and/or speech and language delays, they have more challenges facing them everyday.
I have students from 3 years of age up to 12th grade.
They attend schools with a high poverty rate. All of the students exhibit some kind of speech and language delays which impact their communication as well as their academics. Most depend on visual cues to help with learning and communication. One-third of the students have some type of hearing loss which ranges from mild loss to profoundly deaf. All depend on American Sign language and visual support to succeed. All of my students require very direct teaching of language and articulation skills. They also need frequent repetition of vocabulary and concepts to reinforce their learning.
My Project
The technology and apps today are full of vivid colors and provide visual cues. They can also integrate American Sign Language. There are many apps specifically designed to practice articulation and language skills. The apps are fun ways to teach new skills or to review previously learned skills. With the IPad Mini and the ability to choose a variety of apps, I can match activities to the age, needs and learning style of each of my students. They will benefit from the visual cues and be reinforced by the excitement of being able to use an app to learn and improve their skills.
This one device has the potential to help with therapy and learning for students from 3 years through 12th grade.
Kids who have speech and language difficulties and/or hearing loss benefit greatly from visual cues and repetition. They would be highly motivated to practice their skills using fun games and apps on the iPad Mini.
