My Students

My school is introducting a new class this year. We are trying to get our students into an area of learning that would be interesting or beneficial to them. We are calling these classes, "Nests". My "Nest" will be arts and crafts.

My students come from a low socioeconomic area and are not exposed to a lot of things outside of our community.

They do not know how to sew a button on, or hem a pair of pants. I want to give them some knowledge of how to mend clothes and how to create projects that can be useful around the house.

The students will use this knowledge to alter or mend hand me down clothes and other donated items. This will prove to be beneficial to their overall well being.

My Project

My students are not exposed to creative things within their environment. Sometimes these creative things turn into necessary things in which they will have to take care of in their lifetime. The sewing on of a button, the replacing of a zipper, or the hemming of a piece of clothing might be something that has to be done, using a sewing machine, instead of purchasing new items that are not affordable. The knowledge of being able to do these everyday necessities will make their life easier. They will be able to feel good about themselves and the way that they present themselves to others.
