Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

There are approximately 1,000 students at our middle school, and we are employing peacebuilding and community-building strategies to help students thrive during the tough times of pre-adolescence. Overall, we have a traditional middle school with a progressive staff that is working to transform into a place of community, personal growth, and academic rigor.

We are striving to create a large middle school that feels like an extended family and is a safe, healthful place for students to learn about content, their peers, and themselves.

Our school is a melting pot!

About 40% of our students identify their "race"/ethnicity as White, 40% as Latino, 4% as Black, 3% as Asian, 2% Filipino, and 1% Native American. They are socio-economically diverse as well. Not quite half of our students are living near the poverty line and are eligible for free or reduced-price lunches. The students at our school are full of life and a love of learning. They are eager to grow physically, intellectually, and personally.

My Project

I am requesting new art materials - crayons, markers, and pencils - and a classroom set of the book One Crazy Summer!

Our school community is fairly diverse, but our classroom library was not.

We have great sets of books, but the majority of them have male protagonists and/or white authors. Your generous support has made it possible for us to make our collection more diverse and inclusive! The novel, One Crazy Summer, is about the life of three young girls of color growing up in the 1970s. This novel personalizes history and allows for students to see the world through the eyes of another. It sets the stage for courageous conversations about history, race, and social justice.

Teaching for Black Lives means having a deep understanding of racism in the history of the United States. Reading One Crazy Summer will help students and educators have a fuller understanding of this country's history of white supremacy and the consequences of being enslaved. I want to be able to work for a more equitable, diverse, just, loving, and peaceful community. May it be so!

Additionally, I love doing projects that allow students to draw and color, and be creative. For example, students create visual notes for our Islam unit and draw maps of their Utopian societies for our novel project. At the end of last year, I went through my markers and most of them were dried out so I am looking to replenish my supply so that I can provide markers for all of my students to use.

Lastly, I like to make sure I have the basics (pencils, notebooks, etc) in my classroom so that students can take what they need.

With gratitude,

Ms. Lederman
