Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most of my students are Latino. They attend school in one of the biggest school districts in New Jersey and the majority of them are "English as a Second Language" students. What this means is their parents speak little to no English, and their children are the translators.

Ninety-nine percent of the school receives free lunch and breakfast!

Their parents work in local factories on assembly lines and are not home to wake their children for school in the morning or prepare dinner in the evening. These are children who do not go to dance lessons, or play soccer after school, or take piano lessons, or play football, or are exposed to diverse cultural experiences; they go home to babysit their younger siblings and for safety issues.

School and the classroom are where "It's happening!" One-third of my students arrived in the United States within the past year and do not speak English fluently. This means that in order to instruct these students, not only must resources be in Spanish, but a multitude of other materials must be available to establish and reinforce science, math, and the English language. This reinforces understanding in all academic classes.

My Project

How can you read a novel in class if there are not enough novels for each student? To foster the love of reading, students must be exposed to all genres and physically have those books to hold with their hands. This allows the teacher to send the student home and extend the classroom beyond the walls of the school.

With the current Common Core Standards and test preparation, and expectations and requirements for the classroom teacher to meet, there is less and less time during the school day to accomplish and meet basic student needs.

Not having enough copies of a novel so each student has one, leaves the teacher no choices but to read the novel only in school. It does not allow for independent reading comprehension practice and reinforcement of reading skills.

Having enough novels for each of my students allows for "at-home" reading practice, reading projects outside the classroom, accountability and responsibility, and the fostering of independent reading.
