It has been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that reading is the key to success in school! Latinos are the biggest minority in the United States and the least represented in school classroom libraries. In order to entice children to read, they need books that catch their interest and books that reflect who they are and their culture. My students read a book of their choice everyday for thirty minutes during our "Silent Sustained Reading" time. Having a classroom library of latino-American novels and chapter books will immediately draw them in, show them their teacher cares, and help to improve their reading in an authentic and meaningful way. It speaks to them on common familiar ground and topics they know. This begins to lay the foundation necessary from which to build a love of reading and habits that will follow them for the rest of their lives. But it all starts here!
