Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students I serve in my reading intervention classes are some of the hardest working children I know. Each day, they come into my reading class ready to learn despite some of the challenges they face at home. Most of the students I serve live in poverty and/or come from Non English speaking homes. Aside from when students are in school, they have very limited access to books.
Easy access to interesting books has been proven effective in closing the rich-poor reading achievement gap.
"If you are going to get anywhere in life you have to read a lot of books!" -Roald Dahl.
My Project
As my aspiring readers attain their monthly reading goals designed to help them increase their fluency and accuracy rates, they will be rewarded with a book from some of the more popular series like What If and Captain Awesome.
Students will be able to choose books that will not only continue to motivate them to read but will also help build their personal home libraries.
A "book blessing" will be held to familiarize the children with the different authors/characters in an attempt to help them make choices that will create a library full of a variety of texts. Many of the books are from a series, allowing the students to build familiarity with characters to aid in comprehension of the text. Additionally, some of the nonfiction books will expose students to different types of reading, i.e. reading recipes, biographies, and completing science experiments.
