This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The thing I love most about my scholars is that they are always ALL IN! I would describe them as goal oriented young people who are full of determination and grit. Scholars were given a goal at the beginning of the school year to make reading apart of their everyday life. It was difficult for some scholars to achieve this goal due to a lack of access along with a lack of interest. I teach students who are low-income inner city youth, but that DOES NOT stop them from achieving greatness! Because of hindrances, I investigated to see what books interested the scholars. They responded with many different genres of books, but they still were ALL IN. I went out and purchased some of the books the scholars wanted and every one of the scholars (including students with intellectual disabilities) were reading and exchanging books by the end of the day. Within a week, EVERY scholar had read and passed a quiz on at least three books and were awaiting new arrivals. I was thoroughly impressed and excited for them!
My Project
By purchasing books for these scholars, they will be able to continue to have a moment to escape from reality. Many of my students have factors outside of school that affect them, but reading allows them to ease their mind.
Not only do students read the books individually, but they also discuss the book in a small reading group.
By discussing the book in small groups they are building a life skill of conversation. In addition to having an escape from reality, scholars will also continue to have a love for reading.
