Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are an energetic, culturally diverse, happy, fun group of students who love learning. We are in a rural neighborhood. Approximately 90% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. They experience many challenges in and out of the classroom. They come from many diverse and academically under-served backgrounds. I try to provide meaningful, challenging, flexible, fun experiences for learning. When the learning environment is safe and fun, it allows for them to be more relaxed and push themselves beyond what they thought they were capable of.

My students have incredible minds and are amazing thinkers, who love to read, write, do science, math, history and art.

More than half of my students speak English as their second language. Most of our families work two or more jobs making homework assistance a challenge. My students love to read and be read to. Providing them with more books to read will enhance our unit of traditional literature and expose them to more text.

My Project

Students will work together to be able to take two different traditional literature titles that show the same theme and be able to explain how each story uniquely portrays the theme. They will also work to read a story and identify different themes as well as noticing how an author communicates the theme. We also will look at two books with the same theme and explain how the theme is portrayed in each story as well as be able to tell what is the same and different in two traditional literature stories.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
