My Students

Our program, One Book, One School, is a national initiative occurring in many schools and communities. A “One Book” program comes from a desire to enhance literacy skills and engages community members, students, and their families in reading one literary selection.

To improve literacy, we want to put one book in the hand of each student enrolled.

In the area of reading comprehension, 36% of our students taking state standardized tests in March 2009 scored at the approaching basic or unsatisfactory levels on the reading portion of the LEAP and GEE tests. By providing our 650 students with high interest literature, time to read, and literacy instruction, reading comprehension should improve, and will decrease the amount of students performing below the basic level by approximately 36 people, 6% of our students

My Project

A recent study by the National Education Association reported: • Nearly two-thirds of employers ranked reading comprehension "very important" for high school graduates. Yet 38 percent consider most high school graduates deficient in this basic skill. • American 15-year-olds ranked fifteenth in average reading scores for 31 industrialized nations, behind Poland, Korea, France, and Canada, among others. • Literary readers are more likely than non-readers to engage in positive civic and individual activities – such as volunteering, attending sports or cultural events, and exercising. Our High School is determined to be part of the solution, not the problem, and we would like to invite you to join us. In the 2010-2011 academic year we are initiating One School, One Book to enhance literacy skills among our students and to create a community of learners, including faculty and staff, around the shared experience of reading the same novel.

As our society continues to make demands on us, we hope you will agree that strong, independent, confident readers provide the basis for success in all endeavors.

We thank all of you for your support. As we all read together, the faculty and staff wish you exciting and pleasurable reading adventures.
