This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The girls basketball team at our high school is made of up smart, respectful and determined young ladies. These young ladies understand and know what it takes to be a student athlete. Many of them are enrolled in AP and honors classes and have goals to attend a 4 year University after graduating high school. For many of them, this is their first time ever playing basketball. We are a month into our season and I can truly say that thus far, joining the team has had a positive impact on them.

My Project

In addition to being a first year teacher this year, I decided to join the girls basketball coaching staff at my school. The reason for this is because joining a team allows students to make new connections and build a support system. Participating in athletics drives students' academics. It can really serve as a motivation for students' academic success. One of our challenges however is that many of our students come from low-income families therefore it is challenging for them to gather funds to purchase the proper equipment such as shoes that protect their ankles and kneepads. In addition to this providing students with equipment will better their basketball skills.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
