My Students

I have the joy of teaching 20 goofy, resilient, and inspiring 6th graders. My school is 100% reduced-price/free lunch and has the highest homeless population in the district/city. My students have faced many obstacles at a very young age and often come to school unprepared.

I have fallen in love with this job and want to make sure my students have everything they need to be successful and reach their big dreams.

Due to complex trauma, lack of resources, and other environmental factors, the majority of my students entered 6th grade below grade level in math and reading.

My Project

The leveled readers will allow my students to access literature and comprehend what they are reading. My class ranges from 2nd-7th grade in their reading levels. Currently, I only have books for students at grade level. This leaves many of my students unable to access the text and apply strategies from our English curriculum.

Every child deserves the chance to engage with a book that they are able to read and comprehend.

Not only is reading a calming outlet for many of my students, but it improves spelling, grammar, comprehension and much more. These books would be used during small group instruction, free reading and whole class discussions.
