My Students
We are a K-12 residential school for students with sensory impairments. All of our students are sensory impaired and many of them have an additional disability. We have students living on and off-campus. Our residential students come from all over our state and live on our campus Sunday through Friday. Our school is considered a high poverty school.
The majority of our students have language delays and read below grade level.
They need engaging materials to motivate them to practice their communication and literacy skills. Our students enjoy school and communicating with their peers in sign language.
My Project
Due to sensory impairments, my students have language and communication delays. They need fun, nonthreatening opportunities to work on their language skills. Storytelling would provide an outlet for these skills. My students need a puppet stage and collection of puppets to help them develop and practice their language skills through storytelling. Storytelling enhances language, can increase communication skills, boast creativity, increase understanding of a subject, and increase a student's attention span. My students would enjoy role playing with the puppets and using their language skills to bring the characters to life. They would be developing additional language skills while having fun.
