This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Many teams develop a culture all based on winning or losing, but we develop a culture based on hard work and taking on challenges to strengthen one mentally.

In our team's history, we have ran distances ranging from 1500m to even a half marathon! Many teams have tryouts but we accept all students because no matter what size or level one is, they should still have access to the benefits and joy of running. We train in all sorts of weather, including the rain and snow to develop a strong mindset! We've completed tough challenges such as running five bridges in one day! Our runners treat one another like family members inside and outside of school. We have runners who graduated to high school but still return to help the team out!

My Project

What we learned while coaching our student runners is that they train better when using a personal stopwatch. For example, one workout we do are quarter mile intervals. We have a chart for students to refer to when done with each round. The chart lists finish times with corresponding mile paces. Students who don't have access to a stopwatch are running blind. They don't really know how they're doing because they don't know how fast they're running each round. On the other hand, students who do have access to a stopwatch do know how fast they're running each round. At the end of each round, they can check if they're running too slow, too fast, or just right. Being aware is extremely important for students in their training. Students who have access to stopwatches improve faster than students who don't.

We also use stopwatches for students to check their progress during a race.

For example, many 1 mile races we attend have a course that go out to a halfway point and turn back around. We give each student a projected time they should meet at the halfway point, and they use their stopwatch to see if they're running at the right pace when they reach the halfway point.

Because our students realize how important stopwatches are in their training, we've had a few runners who were able to run in high school save up money to purchase the next-level watch in their running careers, which are the GPS ones.
