Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are K.I.D.S. They are knowledgeable, inquisitive, determined and successful. The school they attend serves a low-income area. For many students, the school sometimes is the most consistent part of their day. Unfortunately, in the last five years that hasn’t been very consistent. New teachers make up between 61-76 percent of the staff each year. This is changing now but the students have accelerated at having positive attitudes towards the school. There is great pride in my students. We have a 95% attendance rate and very low mobility. My school is located in a rural area.
We are the hidden gems of the school district.
The students in my class are thirsty for knowledge. They come to school ready to learn. Eighty percent of the students in the class began our adventure into second grade far below grade level. This hasn’t stopped them from wanting to learn. In fact, it has fueled them. They have big goals, ideas, and hearts.
My Project
Next year our school will consolidate schools. We will be merging 4 communities into one. Having a wide selection of materials for students to use during recess will be beneficial in creating our new community. Students will have the option to play basketball, soccer, football, or 4-square. They may also try bowling, toss a flying disk or jump rope.
Through play students will be able to develop communication skills, problem solving strategies and work as a team.
There will be enough equipment to share with the other seven second grade classes. With this selection of resources, students will be more encouraged to get healthy playtime. They also have the chance to try-out different items.
