My Students

Joining a high school sports team and builds school family and provides school commitment. A typical swim day includes both 2:00 and 5:00 pm practices. To become competitive, swimmers must build an internal clock to self-pace. This is accomplished my using a large clock during practice.

Our swimmers come from diverse backgrounds, encompassing socio-economic, educational, and cultural differences.

Our school is a rural school with over 2,000 students. Some of the students get great grades in advanced classes; others struggle and are port of the bottom 25% of our school scores. Our struggling students need intensive classes often in both math and reading. Due to low economics of our school, the entire student body receives free breakfast and lunch. This is to ensure every student has at least 2 meals per day. Being a part of a team enables some of our students to have a welcoming place to attend after school versus going home to an empty house. Our students are competitive swimmers who work hard at their sport. This year we had 5 competitors compete at the state level in various strokes and we look to better the records next year. Emphasizing strength, endurance, and speed will allow us to accomplish this goal.

My Project

I am requesting a pacing clock for my students to learn self-pacing skills and build speed by decreasing their times per lap. Students will work on timed drills based on a time requirement. This means that if we want a student to swim a 100 yard freestyle event, the students' drill will be 4 sets on the 50. The swimmer would need to start their first set and complete on the 50 and rest until 50 seconds have past. If they didn't finish on the 50, then the swimmer would need to immediately begin the next set hoping to increase their speed so that they could have some rest before the 3rd set. This type of drill not only develops speed but strength and endurance because the swimmer will need to work harder and faster to achieve the goal. As students develop an internal pace clock, they know when to increase speed and when to rest; especially important during a 500 yard event which is 20 laps of a 25 yard pool. Understanding the pacing helps in competition so that you win the race.

Your donation to this project will help my swimmers develop the necessary pacing and speed to be stronger competitors.

For some of our swimmers, academics along may not provide enough financial aid to supplement the cost of higher education. Through swimming, students become more marketable to colleges and may qualify for financial incentives. As coaches, a clock is invaluable when looking to developing pacing and speed. Becoming a member of a team is important for young people.
