My Students

My students come from low-income families. Our school has a very culturally diverse population. Many of the students speak English as a Second Language or will be the first in their family to graduate. I teach 5th Grade English Language Arts and Social Studies and the majority of student time is spent reading, writing, and collaborating.

These students have a desire to learn but many struggle to stay engaged and motivated.

One thing that they LOVE to learn about is history. I have noticed that they are most engaged when we are reading high interest non-fiction or historical fiction.

My Project

The novel, On My Honor, is a great way to begin the new school year for my 5th graders. Students immediately become engaged in the story of Tony and Joel and are motivated to keep reading. This novel also touches on some important themes such as friendship, honesty, respect, and responsibility.

On My Honor is a book that we constantly refer back to during the school year and I would love for all of my students to have their own copy to read in class!

Through this novel, students will learn to infer character traits and actions. They will analyze important themes and relate these themes to their real lives. The lessons learned in this book are invaluable and teach students the importance of being trustworthy and honorable.

I love how this novel engages the students from the beginning to the end, all while teaching them important life lessons. Students will read, write, and collaborate during the reading of this novel. I cannot wait to begin our school year with this amazing text!
