My homebase is made up of 18 students, but the entire first grade (56 students) mixes with each other during various parts of the day. My students are enthusiastic about learning and love hands-on experiences. Our school is an open-design, Title I school. Students are chosen by way of a lottery, drawing from all portions of the city, which allows for a mix of socioeconomic levels to be represented.
I believe every student deserves to feel safe, respected, and successful in my classroom.
We do community circles and other community building activities to help accomplish this. Students also learn about life skills like caring and honesty and how to put those skills to use.
My Project
Elementary students need a lot of movement throughout the day to be at their best for learning. With the removable and reusable decals from the Sensory Path Floor Decal Set we will be able to create an indoor sensory path.
Having a sensory path in a nearby hallway will allow students with ADHD or other sensory needs to take a quick break from class to get out extra energy or receive needed sensory input then return to class ready to move on with the day.
The path will also be accessible for use by all students in our area. Whether it’s an inside recess day, a full moon, or any other day in between our students will be able to walk, jump, and turn on this sensory path to help regain focus for a better learning experience.
