My Project
My district's plan to address pandemic learning loss by adding a 20-day prequel to the school year was adopted at my school with a majority of the teachers and families voting in favor of giving up half of their summer to address deficits in learning. For my Title I school, populated with over 920 students (of which 87% are ELL, 11% Black, and 100% free/reduced lunch) this allows for intensive remediation during the crest of the summer when the rest of the district's students and teachers are relishing in their final carefree days. As the gifted resource teacher for the school, I infuse fun and rigor by pushing into all classes with STEM challenges and activities that connect them to real-life applications in math, science, literacy, and engineering design thinking.
With the start date for our students, who hail from over 12 countries, being only days before the official opening of the 2024 Summer Olympic Games, it's only natural that we optimize our science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) activities with a connection to the international competition.
Every sport uses some tool or course that has been engineered for optimal performance. Our students can focus on the link between scientific hypothesis testing and the iterative process of the engineering design process (EDP).
Mathematical measuring and ordering with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals will come to life as we track results. Model golf courses and rubber-band spring action golf clubs can be created with simple craft materials. The creativity that could be ignited as students create models for the javelin, floating sailboats from foil powered by the wind, a mini skateboard and skatepark, or a one-handed basketball game, or a kayak course that uses magnetism will enliven our competitions and allow connections to countries of origin and the USA.
