This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Art is, unfortunately, an over looked subject. When it is found in public schools, it is often under-funded, forcing the students to work with materials designed more for writing and math than creative visual expression. One of the materials in abundance is crayons. Crayons are fine for adding color, but are not used by artists due to their uneven filling, lack of subtlety, and inability to blend to make new colors. I propose to introduce the students to a more malleable material, the oil pastel. As a new art teacher in an elementary school on Manhattan's Lower East Side, I inherited a program of crayons and student hatred of art class. I am teaching not just that art is, in fact, fun, but the materials and techniques of real artists. The oil pastels would fit into this aspect. I will use them to teach composition, figurative drawing and color theory to the younger students, and if possible, the older students as well. Each class has between 20 and 26 students, so I am seeking enough to cover these numbers, plus extra for wear and tear, which, when working with pre-kindergarten students, can be severe. Students need authentic experiences. In art class, that means creative projects with quality materials. With your help, my students can gain a new working method in, and a new appreciation of, art.
