My Students
We are a 100% free lunch, Title I school with a majority of English language learners.
My students love to learn, be active, and create.
When we go on field trips or participate in programs, we spend the rest of the school year making references and connections to what we saw and did.
My students would benefit more academic field trips and experiences. Lack of transportation and financial burdens keep my students around home and family, and they miss out on museums and other educational opportunities.
My Project
Third graders in California study why people settled in California and who were the first people in their local community.
Students get to play Ohlone games, grind acorns, and use native tools at the San Mateo County History Museum.
In addition, we get a docent-led tour of the Providing Plenty exhibit, which is rich in realia and based on third grade Social Studies content standards. Students are inspired to create their own dioramas of how the Ohlone lived, including shelter, diet, and societal roles.
Seeing the Ohlone exhibit, using the tools, and playing the games makes life long ago clear to my students and gives my English language learners
access to the content vocabulary.
Furthermore, we take the city bus that stops outside our school and lets us off downtown, and then we walk to the museum and have lunch on the steps of the museum.
