Help me give my students end of the year gifts that will build on their emotional and sensory needs through use of fidgets and sensory materials like play doh and sand.
Fidgets and sensory toys have been a huge interest in our classroom this year! Our students have autism and have difficulty calming their bodies independently compared to other students around them. The students have enjoyed using both types of fidget and sensory toys to build on their self-regulation skills. They have used these strategies significantly throughout the year, and we thought it would be a great idea to send these materials home with them over the summer as a way to support their learning needs!
Recognizing and building on emotions is an important skill to practice, especially at a young age.
We have been practicing identifying our emotions throughout the school year and have connected these feelings to stories that we use in the classroom. We thought this would also be a good gift to give the students to continue to practice building on their emotional skills and coping strategies throughout the summer while they are at home with family!
Social-emotional books will be sent home, along with home made feelings charts with coping strategies. It's our hope that parents will take these laminated copies and use them throughout the summer! The lamination sheets will be used for this specific purpose.
Our goal for this project is to connect some of the skills and practices that we used throughout the school year with homes and families. By doing this, we hope to continue to build on self-help and self-regulation skills during a time where we may see regression of skills. My students are special to me, and I want them to continue to grow even when I am not there. By giving them these tools as end of the year gifts, we are supporting their needs!
