I am a first year teacher at an elementary school in Utah. I teach fifth graders and right now have a group of 24 students. I want to give my students opportunities to work in literature circles and read books in cooperative groups.

Have any of you dreamed of meeting someone that is different from you? We don't have many opportunities to "explore" the world and cultures around us. I feel that reading is a way to do this and so I would like to introduce my students to people their age that have had very different life styles. I need different books in order to do so. I just did a form of literature circles and my students did very well with them and they were able to better comprehend what they read. I want to break them up into smaller groups now and have them share the experiences of these different people and share them with the class. This is one of the only ways that I can bring different cultures, customs, and people from other places to our classroom.

I would like to have different trade books that will help my students learn about different people from different cultures around the world. I need eight or so different titles that will help my students accomplish this.

With your help, I will be able to give my students an opportunity to "visit" different places in the world and see what it would be like to live there. You will also be able to help them work in small cooperative learning groups on students their own level, which will make learning a lot more enjoyable.
