This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I work at a Title I School where the students have a desire to learn, but they do not always have the supplies they need in order to experience all that the world has to offer to them. The school itself does a great job in encouraging the students to keep alive their desire to learn and strengthen their abilities to work hard to achieve their goals. Overall, my students are respectful and caring kids who have a passion for learning so they can gain the knowledge they need to become better citizens of society.
My Project
The materials in this project focus on getting my students books on their level, introducing them to new authors through chapter books that will be read as a whole class, and getting them to introduced to new reading comprehension skills in mini lessons. To make this happen, my project includes a class set of The BFG novel along with Frindle, leveled readers for my students who need that extra assistance when reading lower level books, and mentor texts for comprehension.
I've noticed that throughout the years, I have been relying on YouTube or the library to provide me with resources for my students and this project will definitely help me not rely so much on outside sources and have the resources my students and I need within the classroom.
Also, I have been using the same chapter read aloud books for the past couple of years and I believe my students, and I, need a change! They need to be able to get books on their level, but also experience new authors, genres, and story lines on their grade level so they can visualize the levels they need to meet to be a great, on level reader.
