My students are hungry for learning, and more specifically, literature choices that reflect characters who experience life similarly to them. Seeing themselves in their book choices will vastly improve engagement and motivation in reading.
As a whole, my students are eager to learn and put forth their full potential in all that they do.
They particularly enjoy it when I make learning relative to their lives. My students have already grown by leaps and bounds in their reading skills. By giving them more diverse literature choices, I hope to contribute to their increased love of reading.
My Project
These diverse books play a vital role in my daily literacy instruction. Through our #classroombookaday routine, students not only learn about new people and experiences, but they also begin to recognize effective writing strategies used by authors. Figurative language comes alive. Grammar in context suddenly begins to make sense. Students begin to deeply analyze the broader message conveyed by the author.
My students have shared that their reading experiences are much richer and more relevant when they see themselves mirrored in the literature available to them.
By incorporating diverse literature that is nonfiction, students' learning experiences are enriched and the love of reading flourishes.
