Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As an elementary teacher, I understand how important it is to teach the skills my students will need for the future. I don’t just teach them what they need to know “now”, but the skills they will need when they become young adults and part of the workforce.

I teach 24 fantastic 3rd-grade students in a low-income/high poverty Title 1 school in central Los Angeles.

At our school, 100% of our students qualify for free breakfast, lunch, and hot supper programs. Each year a handful of my students experience homelessness. Most, if not all, my students live in apartment complexes or multi-family homes. They have an unwavering interest in learning. Their parents are equally enthusiastic and supportive of their education. Unfortunately, they have limited resources.

My students are striving to be critical thinkers, innovative inventors, and problem solvers who will utilize their learning and skills to contribute to society.

My Project

This project will help provide students in my classroom/school with everyday winter necessities. It will provide students with beanies, sweaters, long sleeve shirts, socks, umbrellas and ponchos. There are several homeless and high poverty families within my school that come to school without being prepared. Many rely on school just to provide them with a meal and a safe place to be.

The beanies, sweaters, long sleeve shirts, socks, umbrellas and ponchos that I am requesting will be used throughout our school to assist our needy youth.

Students who are experiencing homelessness find it difficult to come to school when it is cold or raining because they don’t have adequate clothing to keep them warm and dry throughout the day. Most students also walk to and from school on a daily basis. When it rains, many students come to school once the rain stops, which makes them late, or not at all because they do not have gear to keep them dry. The supplies that I have requested will help students attend school on cold and/or rainy days by providing warm and appropriate clothing and protection.

The lives of these students are difficult enough as it is. I want to make their school life as pleasant as possible. This project will address the urgent needs of students by providing supplies so they can come to school with self-confidence and equipped to learn.
