My Project

To teach our students about coral reefs, including the significance of corals in the food chains and webs in the world oceans, my collaborative partner and I have teamed up to create a hands-on experience. For the first part of this project, we will recreate a habitat where coral, algae, and maybe more critters, will be housed in aquaria tanks in our classrooms.

It is our hope that the experience will allow students an understanding and desire to conserve the resources of our planet, and for this Part of the project my colleague and I require a PAR meter to determine the photosynthetic active radiation to measure growth potential for the symbiotic algae that live within the tissues of coral organisms.

Students will get firsthand experience with coral reef ecosystems, coral organisms and their symbiotic relationship with zooxanthellae. They will take part in the feeding and care of the organisms, and they will observe the subsequent growth and interactions of the corals and other organisms.

The PAR meter is an expensive but extremely important component of the project. It is an integral tool used to determine the active radiation for photosynthesis, required for the survival of zooxanthellae algae that live in the tissues of coral organisms. Coral organisms are important reef builders, and they cannot live without the algae; therefore, it is extremely important to monitor the amount of light which is necessary for photosynthesis to occur for healthy reef growth.
