My Students

Do you have a story to tell that you want recorded for history? Have you ever read the Slave Narratives or listened to StoryCorps on PBS? How awesome would it be to have a group of students record their community's history using the most up to date technology?

Our school is an urban school in Oakland, CA.

Our school's mission is to promote citizenship and build a civil society by creating educational models and programs that draw upon the power of service as a way of learning. As an elementary school, we prepare our students for their lifelong roles as citizens by instilling them with academic, artistic and civic literacy. We strive to have students become social activists who will make a difference in the World one day.

My Project

Our students will become more engaged in learning about not only the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, but the other major movements in our country's history(i.e.: farm workers, immigrants, Asian-Americans, gays and lesbians, etc). Allowing students to meet local people who were or currently are involved in these movements will make the pages of history come alive. They will be inspired by talking to and hearing the life stories of these very important people and understand that activism, no matter how small or large, has made an impact on our community and many others around this country.

A few years ago Oprah stated that our society does not do a good job at educating our students about their past, namely the Civil Rights Movement and those who died and sacrificed for our current freedoms.

Our unit has focused on those who are not highlighted in the history books, such as Amzie Moore and Septima Clark. Through their work the students will understand what the fight for rights consisted of and lessons they could take away to create change in their community.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
