Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

One of the California kindergarten standards is, "Students recognize national and state symbols and icons such as the national and state flags, the bald eagle, and the Statue of Liberty." This is a very difficult standard for many of my students. I teach kindergarten in San Jose, California at a low income school. Most students have never traveled out of the area. The only way to teach students about our national symbols and important landmarks is through pictures and books. The materials that I am asking for include colorful posters and books to help the kids learn about our country. These materials will help me start out the 2006-2007 school year on the right foot. They will not only help my own class of 20, but also my partner teacher's class of 20. I expect the books and posters to last for many years to come and help at least 200 students. I am also requesting the Weekly Reader Kindergarten magazine for the 2006-2007 school year. The Weekly Reader magazine uses interesting themes like bats and nature to help develop reading, critical thinking, and citizenship skills. It also includes s giant sized magazine each week for the teacher to use to help facilitate learning. Students would each receive their own magazine for 28 weeks. I know that this resource would encourage reading and generate excitement among all the students. This would be something that they could then take home to share with the whole family.
