Help me give my students a chance to experience growing plants indoors (hydrophonic) to outdoors. As they see the seeds progress to seedlings, then to viable plants, they will learn the environmental impact of farm-to-table.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
The process of farm-to-table will help my students, low-income (98%), English as a second language (100%) learn how they can not only help the environment by growing food but also help themselves by being able to eat their produce.
Imagine the excitement as the students, most of whom live in apartments with no green space, see the process of germination, and then use the hydroponic equipment to facilitate our in-classroom garden.
Day by day they will see how each seed begins to sprout as its root system develops. Their plants will continue to mature as they will see the leaves begin to bud. Once a plant has gone through all the germination stages, the seedlings are ready to be transplanted by the students into the domed containers. Finally, we will have fully matured seedlings that we can grow around the school, where not only will they see the 'fruits of their labors', but students from other classes will be able to marvel at vegetables growing in the school's backyard. As the vegetables mature, the students will bring them home to eat. The project is over, but not the life-long learning that the students have acquired; new vocabulary in English, hydroponic technology, skills to share with their community.
