This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a small, hands-on, project and adventure based high school. At SAEL, students are crew, not passengers. We challenge EVERY student to engage directly in their own learning. Our interdisciplinary curriculum is driven by a union of strong academic standards and place-based service projects.

Our students come from two counties and a variety of backgrounds but have in common the decision to attend a high school that challenges them to apply their learning to make a positive impact on their local and global community NOW.

They are enthusiastic, creative, curious, ambitious, hard-working and inspiring. 42% of our students this year qualify for free or reduced lunch and 40% will be the first in their families to attend college.

My Project

Each year we survey our students to learn about their interests and the elective courses they would like us to offer in support of these. The strongest request is always for a cooking elective. Unfortunately, our campus does not have a sufficient kitchen space to allow us to offer this important learning opportunity.

The camp stoves, toaster ovens, and blenders I am requesting for this project will allow me to convert my science lab into a cooking space for a Nutrition and Wellness elective this semester.

Students will learn the science of good nutrition and practice preparing healthy, affordable meals. The materials will also be used in the future to expand our culinary elective offerings through courses such as Food Science and Foods Around the World.
