Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are curious four year old minds that love learning. Every area of our classroom should invite a student to explore. They enjoy learning about all things big or small and they do it with their friends as a "class family".
My students feel like play is a reward but in reality it is where the learning is applied and their language develops as they discuss with their partners during play.
Math concepts are difficult for my students if the vocabulary is not developed and I hear important conversations every day as I create a math environment that they can get excited about and I love seeing that interest spark up a conversation between friends.
My Project
Our Math Center is a place where the students visit and have choices of what they would like to play with and share with a friend. Every math box provides and opportunity to explore many math concepts with some items provided. Guidance is always needed but the independence grows with every day as the students learn to count higher or understand the scale to weight and make comparisons. My students are given about an hour of the day to spend exploring such boxes.
Students love counting and sorting when they find a box full of dinosaurs or apples which are topics that we read and discuss about in our curriculum.
Bean bags with numbers and letters makes it easy to apply movement and learning indoors or outdoors.
My students enjoy every lesson when they are allowed the choices and opportunities to take some academic knowledge such as counting and sorting and putting that into action with play.
