Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students in my class and school are motivated, hard working, and excited to learn. All they want is the same opportunities as anyone else. They are children who deserve to have access time quality literature and novel experiences.

My students come from an area of extreme poverty yet have so much determination and happiness.

All of the students at my school receive free or reduced-price lunch and breakfast. A large percentage are of a Hispanic background and speak English as a second language. They live in small homes with a large number of family members, making learning at home difficult. For some, their daily lives are full of trials and tribulations, and school serves as their foundation.

My students come to school as a place to dream and plan for the their future. Due to budget cuts, class sizes are large, and our supplies are limited. However, our teachers and students are the hardest working, most dedicated you'll ever meet.

My Project

Students will get lost in the historical literature of Number the Stars. They will learn about the extreme experiences families faced during the Holocaust as told through the eyes of a ten year old girl. Students will read chapters in a whole class, groups, and partner settings. Later they will respond to text through writing to prompts and answering evidence based questions. Students will enhance their literacy skills but will do so through learning about a critical part of our world’s history. With access to their own Individual books, students will have a greater ability to interact with the text in a meaningful way. These books will serve students for many years to come!
