I am a special education consultant teacher in a rural school district. I have the pleasure of working with students in fifth and sixth grade. My undergraduate degree is in integrated arts (illustration and technical theatre), and my masters degree is in childhood and special education. I am certified to teach childhood grades 1-6, special education grades 1-6, and visual arts grades K-12.
I am always looking for new and creative ways to teach my students.
I thoroughly enjoy taking time to get to know each of my students as unique learners, and finding ways to make their learning experience a meaningful one.
My Project
Number talks are brief discussions (5–15 minutes) that focus on student solutions for a single, carefully chosen mental math computation problem. Students share their different mental math processes aloud while the teacher records their thinking visually on a chart or board. The teacher often names the strategies each student uses. Other students may question, critique, or build on the strategies that are shared.
Sherry Parrish's Number Talks books teach how to improve engagement by allowing students to silently display how many strategies they can come up with by using hand signals.
This allows all ranges of learners to work at their own pace. This type of learning is perfect for my students.
