Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am the proud teacher of 26 first grade students. The delightful children in my care are hard working scholars and eager learners in spite of the many challenges they face as English learners from low-income families. Poverty and trauma play a significant role in many of their lives, but a classroom is a place where they can thrive and grow. I am honored to provide them with a sense of stability, a safe haven of learning where each child is valued and respected. In our classroom, we promote a culture of kindness as members of the "Kind Kids Club" and perform random acts of kindness throughout the school year. My students inspire me every day and I strive to better myself as an educator for them.
My Project
Individual student rekenreks, or arithmetic racks, will cultivate number sense and prepare students for addition and subtraction. Using this tool will give my students an opportunity to manipulate numbers in groups of 5 and 10 as well as help them with doubling, halving, and counting on strategies.
Research has consistently indicated the importance of helping children visualize number quantities as a collection of objects.
The structure of the rekenrek highlights groups of 5 and offers the visual they need to train their brains to see in groups of 5 and 10. This will provide them with a solid foundation in basic number sense and prepare them for addition and subtraction in the near future.
