This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

The goal of this project is to provide more reading material that is reflective of their cultural experiences while simultaneously increasing their literacy levels.

The students at my school have reading scores that are amongst the lowest in the district and studies have shown that readers score higher.

Because of our school's low performance, we have been regulated to scripted/prescriptive programs in the regular English classrooms. However, in my designated English Language Development course, I have the opportunity to be more creative and provide them with diverse literacy experiences.

This project is filled with materials that create an atmosphere for learning, which includes bilingual posters, shorter books, and bilingual anthologies. These resources will make my students feel more successful in shorter sprint-like increments, as opposed to the marathon-like projects found in the traditional classroom.
