This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach second grade in a community with a high percentage of military families. This causes a higher rate of transiency at times. My school is a Title I school which means all students receive free breakfast and lunch. Many of the students are proficient readers but need to be challenged with a variety of rich, diverse text. Students who don't enjoy reading need incentives so they don't fall behind either. This school community was also impacted by Hurricane Florence in October of 2018 which caused many of my students to miss reading opportunities.
My Project
Cultural diversity, critical reading, and critical thinking strategies will increase when rich reading experiences take place. Through this opportunity, students learn empathy, acceptance, tolerance, and respect of others no matter their race, religion, etc. A themed reading area would gain the attention of more students in the classroom and encourage a love of reading. Rich, diverse text, Director's chairs, and book bins would "set the stage for reading" and really appeal to my most reluctant readers. Without the support of donors like you, the children may not get those rich reading experiences that they need to help become life long lovers of reading.
