Now and Zen: Bringing Yoga and Mindfulness to the Classroom

My Students
My students are a diverse group of children. They come from many different countries and speak many different languages. Many of my students have come from refugee camps where they (and some of their parents) were born and raised. Many did not have access to organized school/education. For some, my school is their first experience in a brick and mortar school setting.
Many of my students live busy lives - they attend school all-day, Monday thru Friday, they attend daycare in the evenings and then attend dugsiga (religion school) on the weekends.
My Project
Childhood stress has increased in the past few decades, with about 40% of kids reporting that they worry too much. (KidsMatter) Many of my students have experienced multiple stressful situations: transitions of many kinds, family finances, physical and emotional stress, personal or family illness, and separation from family members, to name a few. These stressful situations often create trauma and manifest as anxiety, depression, withdrawal and/or lashing out.
"Visiting Feelings", "I Am Human: A Book of Empathy", "The Day You Begin", and "Listening With My Heart: A Story of Kindness and Self Compassion" will be great resources for my classroom.
These are stories that validate feelings and emotions and encourage young people to face their fears or challenges.
On the other hand, "Yoga Frog", "Moody Cow Meditates" and "Parker Pig Goes to Yoga" are fun and silly ways to talk about finding inner-peace. These books are a light-hearted balance to some of the more "serious" books.
