My students need novels they can relate to so they can dive into reading and improve their literacy skills while learning that reading is fun!

My Students
My students attend an urban alternative school. They are considered at risk, meaning that they are at a greater risk than the average for dropping out of school. Most of my students are several grade levels behind where they need to be in both reading and math, a problem which can make it even easier for them to make the decision to drop out as they feel frustrated on a daily basis in the classroom.
We strive to help our students who are behind in reading and math grow two years during the course of one academic year through rigorous and intensive instruction.
My students are assessed at multiple points each year to measure growth in literacy and math. By the time they leave our school, most students have made momentousness progress in their reading and math levels.
My Project
One of the best ways to improve literacy skills is for students to immerse themselves in a book. As most of my students are multiple grade levels behind in literacy, finding ways to help them build their skills is a big part of my job. By providing them with books they are more likely to enjoy, there is a better chance they will continue to pick up books and improve their reading skills by reading more.
Students are more likely to be engaged if they can relate to the characters and settings in the book they are reading.
Many of the books in middle school ELA curriculum do not represent urban youth. By providing novels where my students are more likely to find representation of themselves in the characters, plot, or setting will help them feel more engaged in the reading. This in turn will help them not just read the book but dive deeper into the more nuanced plot points.
