My Project

The novels Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan and The Watsons Go to Birmingham – 1963 by Christopher Paul Curtis are musts in the classroom.

They are powerful, age-appropriate novels that support fifth grade scholars in developing not only as strong readers but also as thoughtful leaders.

Esperanza Rising tells the story of a young girl who must rebuild her life after her family loses everything during the Great Depression. As Esperanza faces hardships as a migrant farmworker, students learn about resilience, empathy, and social justice. The novel introduces rich vocabulary and figurative language, while its historical context helps students understand economic inequality and the immigrant experience. Through Esperanza’s transformation, students witness the power of perseverance and compassion—key qualities in leadership. Discussions around identity, privilege, and responsibility provide opportunities for students to reflect on their own values and choices.

The Watsons Go to Birmingham – 1963 blends humor and history to tell the story of an African American family’s trip from Michigan to the segregated South during the Civil Rights Movement. Through the eyes of ten-year-old Kenny, students explore themes of family, courage, and social change. The novel encourages readers to analyze character development, dialogue, and historical setting, strengthening comprehension and critical thinking skills. It also fosters deep discussions about racism, empathy, and how young people can stand up for justice—core lessons in ethical leadership.

Together, these novels offer diverse perspectives and emotionally engaging narratives that help students connect literature to real-world issues. By reading and analyzing these stories, fifth graders expand their literacy skills and grow as individuals who think critically, speak thoughtfully, and lead with heart. These texts not only build academic confidence but also inspire students to become compassionate citizens in their communities and beyond.
