Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a K-6 elementary school in the heart of Richmond, California. My students are a diverse group of learners who show up every day with incredibly positive attitudes.
My students are the most amazing group of kids.
They are a creative, talented, intelligent group and are always active participants in their learning. While my kids' learning styles are extremely varied, we emphasize collaboration and pride ourselves on our ability to work together as a class to solve problems. We employ a variety of resources to make sure every student gets what he or she needs.
My Project
My classroom is made up of readers whose reading levels span from preschool to middle school level. For this reason, my students often spend their reading time working silently on books at their individual levels rather than reading as a class. It's been challenging to give my students access to grade-level reading material due to a lack of resources.
We have one class set of books which are leveled around a 7 meaning they are ideal for kids reading at a seventh grade level; my readers average around a third to fourth grade level, so the books we have in the classroom are not accessible to the vast majority of my kids.
I've been on the hunt for a grade level book that will be interesting enough to hold my students' attention, and is also available in Spanish since four of my readers don't speak English yet. Holes is an awesome and engaging book that will, hopefully, allow my students to read and discuss together as a whole class.
