My Project

My students work hard to develop their literacy skills through explicit phonics instruction, incorporating novel studies allows them to apply their skills to read a text. Having a larger variety of text sets will provide choice for my students and encourage engagement. These novels will allow them to apply the skills they learned to build their reading fluency and practice comprehension skills.

I want to challenge my students to read higher level texts that will promote more opportunities for group discussion and discourse, as well as foster an enjoyment for reading.

My goal is for students to apply their phonics skills to read more fluently which will allow for more opportunities to work on and build comprehension skills and higher-level thinking, such as metacognition, questioning, making predictions, and making inferences. I have chosen books that I think will be of high interest, while still being at a reading level that is accessible for my students.

Since I have a wide range of learners with unique needs, I have also included some sensory supports to ensure that I can address potential barriers. An additional wobble stool and bouncy bands will ensure that students who need that movement are able to choose alternative seating that will allow them to focus on the task at hand. Sensory balls and putty allow them to have a fidget in their hand while still being able to read and participate in discussions.
