Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a middle school in Oakland, CA. It is a place where dreams take flight and knowledge is nurtured. However, a stark reality weighs heavily on the hearts of its teachers and staff.
Over half of our students are kids from Black, Latino, and Native American backgrounds, as well as from low-income households.
While the diversity of the student body is celebrated, it also highlights a troubling disparity in the education system. Schools like ours, which predominantly cater to students of color, receive significantly reduced state and local assistance compared to our counterparts serving predominantly White students. Simple things like balls to play sports, jump ropes, and glue sticks for art projects. We often run out of pencils and paper to help our students take notes. My students are wonderful, smart, and engaged.
Despite the obstacles we face, the dedicated teachers of our school refuse to let circumstances beyond their control limit their students' potential.
My students often come to school hungry. We teachers at our school take it upon ourselves to supply them with much-needed snacks. Out of our own pockets, we purchase granola bars, fruit cups, and other treats that help sustain our students throughout the day.
The teachers at our middle school know the importance of creating a nurturing environment for our students. We recognize that hunger should never be a barrier to learning. However, the financial burden of providing these snacks falls solely on our shoulders. We would appreciate your assistance beyond measure, and we sincerely thank you all!
