I work in an urban, highly diverse school. I teach Physics, Honors Physics, and AP Physics. My students are very driven to explore science, and they often collaborate to complete their work.
My classroom serves students of all levels, from AP students to students who don't have any interest in science.
Students come from a wide range of socioeconomic levels and ethnic backgrounds. That's the beauty of our neighborhood; you get a little bit of everything.
Our school has the largest student population of all high schools in our district and is located just east of the city center. For over a hundred years, we have provided a space for students to receive a high quality education and to instill the values we hope to see in all of our graduates. Each of my students is a part of a legacy.
My Project
Our school has implemented interactive notebooks campus-wide. Physics requires students to do a significant amount of graphing, and many of my students are struggling to purchase basic composition notebooks. With this project, students would be able to use a much better format for their interactive notebooks. Graphing notebooks would allow them to conduct physics experiments and record data and graphs directly in their notebooks, rather than completing it on loose leaf graph sheets and taping them in. With these notebooks, our students can create much more professional and clean-looking notebooks that they can keep (and refer to) for their whole high school career.
These notebooks provide a essential resource to our students, as well as an opportunity to create a professional work portfolio.
I submitted this project last year, and it made a massive difference. I am hopeful that we can make it happen again this year for my new group of students.
