I am a music teacher at a high school (9-12). 47% of the student population of my school receives free or reduced lunch. We are in a very low-income area. I teach an audition concert/show choir, four levels of piano theory, and music appreciation. I would like a notebook computer. My room is quite large. I have only been at this school for three years and since then have spent quite a bit of time and energy creating various learning environments with the space. Since a laptop works with a remote, I would be able to move around the room and the piano lab freely among the students as the information is being presented. This would also allow the student who is reluctant to raise his/her hand with a question to ask the question in a more private setting. The location of my desktop computer puts me sitting almost underneath the wall projection, not allowing for interaction with the students without a lot of moving around and wasting of instructional time. This new technology will open the door for many new teaching and learning tools. A laptop computer would allow me to share information from the internet with each class using my projector and wall screen. A laptop, connected to the projector, would allow me to demonstrate the use of computer music programs; such as "Finale", with the entire class. "Finale" is a program by which music students can learn to transpose and write music. It also allows them to hear what they have written immediately even if they are still troubled with playing the piano. In Music Appreciation, pictures of composers and examples of their music can be brought up on the laptop and viewed by all of the class at the same time. In both situations, instructional time will be utilized better with the use of the laptop as opposed to pictures being held up to the class and the use of CD's or cassettes, and working at the piano one student at a time. Information that I would like the students to have in any of my classes, music theory and music history, can be typed into the laptop and projeced for all to see throughout my large room. This will allow students to view the material without moving to see the board due to others in the way or glare on the board, not to mention my sometimes tired handwriting. Students will also be able to use the laptop to present various music projects: powerpoint displays of their music appreciation reports, music they have composed using a music writing program, allowing the entire class to see and critique on the spot. The students and I will be able to view digitally recorded performances of both the choir and piano classes. This will allow for correction of many performance needs prior to the performance.
