Not-So-Mad Science!!!

Help me give my students a Van de Graaf generator in order to observe the forces of static electricity and a microscope that can connect to the school computer and be projected largely for discussion.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What I love about my students is that they are overcoming tremendous obstacles in their community in order to create the best future for themselves.

Many of my students are in the foster system, have parents that are imprisoned and quite a few of them are homeless.

Although they have their challenges, they band together to create a positive, safe atmosphere where they can learn and better themselves. They haven't had many opportunities to have hands-on experiments. I want to give them the opportunity to learn about science the way real scientists do, through inquiry-based learning and hands-on experiments.

My Project

The Van de Graaff generator provides an excellent visual example of how similar electric charges repel one another and opposite electric charges attract one another. It also provides a visual for students to see electric energy in the form of sparks, which can be small models of lightning.

The microscope that can connect to my computer will provide my students with an opportunity to see microscope slides, up to 2500x the actual size, projected onto a projection screen.

This will allow students to see things in real time, not just a video on youtube. Microscopes that zoom in as far as this one does are kind of difficult to maneuver and this will allow me to show students very specific things on microscope slides that otherwise they wouldn't be able to view. The microscopes at the school only zoom in to 20x actual size.
