Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Reading... blah! Writing... it's so boring! Or so is the opinion of adolescents these days. Imagine these two subjects from the standpoint of an English Language Learner. Instead of boring, reading and writing in their second language might seem more like an arduous task.
At my middle school, which serves a large population of Hispanic students, I have 24 English Language Learners.
The students are in grades 5 through 8. While most of them are fluent in conversation, they struggle with academic language. Many come from homes in which parents only speak in their native language. Thus, the students' practice of English is limited to the school.
My Project
These 5 electronic translators/dictionaries will provide students with another level of language support. Though they are taught vocabulary and how to use context clues, there are still instances when they will encounter words that they are unfamiliar with.
The translator model that I am requesting includes a grammar book, idioms and irregular verbs. With these features, students will not only be able to utilize these devices during reading but would also benefit from them while writing. It also has an audio feature that would allow students to hear the pronunciation of the word, which might encourage hesitant speakers.
Receiving these devices would support my students' learning.
Instead of skipping over unfamiliar words, students will be able to define the words in seconds. As a result, there will be better comprehension of what is being read. Also, as students write papers they can type in the word they are thinking of in their native language to find the English translation. It would lessen the amount of time students spend trying to figure out what English word they want to use.
